[VIDEO] : ARGENTINA 1 – 3 VENEZUELA [FRIENDLY] HIGHLIGHTS 2019
Oh no! Despite the fact Lionel Messi’returned to the Argentina the match ended in a shock 3-1 friendly defeat to Venezuela in Madrid on Friday.
Messi had not played for the national team since their last-16 elimination by eventual winners France at the 2018 World Cup – a tournament for which Venezuela finished bottom of South American qualifying.
Venezuela did get their spot-kick in the 75th minute after Juan Foyth clumsily brought down substitute Josef Martinez, who sent Armani the wrong way with a peculiar penalty routine, running up and leaping into the air before striking the ball.
But it was Rafael Dudamel’s men who stole the show at the Wanda Metropolitano, with Salomon Rondon and Jhon Murillo firing them into a 2-0 lead in the first half.
Lautaro Martinez pulled one back for Argentina after the interval but this was a poor showing from Lionel Scaloni’s side, whose fate was sealed by a Josef Martinez penalty 15 minutes from time.
Venezuela took their unexpected lead when a ball over the top from Roberto Rosales was brilliantly brought down and prodded home by a composed Rondon after only six minutes.
The African giant Nigeria defeated Seychelles 3-1 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium on Friday to end their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on a high. Goals from Odion Ighalo, Henry Onyekuru and substitute Moses Simon helped Gernot Rohr’s side do the double over their visitors
Odion Ighalo opened the scoring from the penalty spot, before Rody Melanie – against all odds and all thanks to a Francis Uzoho howler – levelled for the Pirates to end the first half in a stalemate. Goals from Henry Onyekuru and substitute Moses Simon won the game for the Super Eagles, who were unconvincing at times in the dead rubber game.
William Troost-Ekong and Kenneth Omeruo were preferred centre-back partners, with Leon Balogun – who had injury concerns before the game – left on the bench. Shehu Abdullahi regained his right-back spot after missing out on the previous games through injury.
Galatasaray winger Onyekuru made his full international debut in a competitive tie, replacing the unavailable Samuel Kalu on the right wing of a 4-3-3 formation – with Odion Ighalo leading the line.
In the fifth minute, miscommunication between the Seychelles defence and their goalie Ian Ha Kong almost gifted the hosts the lead, but they were quick to clear their lines, with Ighalo probing.
However, against the run of play, Uzoho overcame his first test, reacting quickly to palm a teasing right-wing cross. Gervais Wave-Hive tested Nigeria’s defence with a well-whipped freekick, but the Anorthosis goalie thwarted the effort.
Nigeria were edging closer to an elusive first goal with the Seychelles defence – set up in half in blocks – proving stubborn to break down.
But for a tame Ighalo effort, the Super Eagles would have opened the scoring in the 24th minute. The Shanghai Shenhua marksman could not get a proper touch on a weak Wilfried Ndidi shot, after the Leicester City midfielder skillfully worked his way into Seychelles area.
Ighalo made way for Simon late in the game after falling badly, but the Levante winger took the chance to make the points safe for the Super Eagles, smashing in a low effort to end the game 3-1.

Luis Suarez is Barcelona's third top El Clasico scorer with 11 goals - behind Lionel Messi (26) and Cesar Rodríguez (14)
Luis Suarez scored twice as Barcelona won at Real Madrid in a smash-and-grab El Clasico to reach a sixth consecutive Copa del Rey final.
Real dominated with 14 shots to Barca's four but the visitors were clinical when it mattered.
Suarez smashed home Ousmane Dembele's cross before Raphael Varane's own goal put Barca in control.
An audacious chipped penalty from Suarez after he was fouled by Casemiro put the game beyond any doubt.
Both sides - who had drawn the first leg 1-1 - meet again at the Bernabeu on Saturday in La Liga.
Now over to Saturday's Clasico back in Madrid, with Barcelona looking to expand their seven-point lead at the top over Atletico Madrid.
Frustrating night for Real
Raphael Varane tried to stop a cross reaching Luis Suarez and put it past his own keeper
Real Madrid knew a goalless draw would take them to a first Copa del Rey final since 2013-14 because of their away goal in the 1-1 first-leg draw at the Nou Camp.
But they played like the team who wanted to score, with teenager Vinicius Jr in explosive form, especially in the first half.
The Brazilian, who has been one of his team's stars under Santiago Solari, caused defender Semedo numerous problems and had five of the seven shots in the first half - as well as a strong penalty appeal turned down.
His best chance came when Ter Stegen denied him from close range, while he also lashed over twice from inside the box.
Real continued to push after Suarez's opener as they searched for the goal which would force extra-time.
Another youngster, left-back Sergio Reguilon, had their best chance with a wonderful diving header which Ter Stegen expertly saved. The other full-back, Dani Carvajal, also had a fierce drive saved by the keeper.
Gareth Bale came on moments before Varane's own goal which killed the tie and rarely had a chance as the flow of the game had changed in Barca's favour.
Now Solari faces a big test to lift his players for the repeat fixture on Saturday evening (19:45 GMT).
Defeat in that would see Real - who have already lost seven La Liga games this season - slip 12 points behind the champions. But there is no suggestion Solari's job is under threat, with Madrid having won eight of their previous 10 games in all competitions.
Download Arsenal v Bate 3:0 video highlights Bouncing back from a tough first leg, Arsenal cruised through in the Europa League with a dominant display against BATE on Thursday. Arsenal eased into the last 16 of the Europa League with a 3-0 win at Emirates Stadium to turn their tie against BATE on its head.
Unai Emery’s men were miserable in the away leg last week as they were beaten 1-0, but an aggregate 3-1 triumph was secured with a minimum of fuss after cancelling out the deficit early.
Zakhar Volkov’s own goal was followed by a second from Shkodran Mustafi before the interval, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos then making sure on the hour.
Visitors BATE offered little in response and Emery was able to breathe easily as his side chased further goals in a competition that may yet define his first season in London.
BATE had already survived a couple of early scares when, with four minutes on the clock, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tore down the right and centred, seeing Volkov stab awkwardly into his own net after Egor Filipenko failed to clear at the near post.
Apparently unable to shut up shop, the visitors then went on the offensive and Stephan Lichtsteiner was required to scramble clear from the Arsenal goal line as Stanislav Dragun found himself unmarked.
Aubameyang was among those to pass up further opportunities to bolster the scoreline, yet Arsenal’s advantage was never in trouble.
